12 Jun Where are all the photos of me and Mum?
Recently it was my Mum’s birthday. I can’t share how old she was (she’ll kill me! Lol) but it was kind of a big deal. To surprise Mum I wanted to put together a slide show and include a variety of photos of her and me. I asked my Dad to help with sneaking all the photo albums out of their house, which he somehow managed.
More than 40 years of photos are contained in this mountain of photo albums, so with a hot coffee I sat on the ground, surrounded by my family’s photographic history and grabbed the first album, then the second and the third.
After sifting through the albums, I had come across all the photos of Mum and myself. I saw heaps of photos of Dad and me, or Mum with Dad, but only about a dozen photos of Mum and me! Photos from Dubbo Zoo, a few with Mum while I was a baby, when we rode the Puffing Billy, and when we visited Port Arthur during a family trip to Tasmania. Fast forward to the birth of my daughter in 2001 and there are a few more photos of Mum with my daughter …
Guess who captured the majority of the photos as I was growing up? Mum.
Mum captured photos of me looking super cute with my curly hair, freezing these moments of my life forever with their Kodak camera, caught on 35mm film, printed and carefully collated in those albums for future strolls down memory lane. But she so rarely appeared in those photos.
I was actually a little sad by the time I got to the end of the last album. Sad that while I know she was there, she’s not beside me in many of these photos.
In 2017 it was estimated that there would be more than 14 billion photos taken annually. This is an average of about 3,000 digital photos per person per year, or about 8 photos per day.
So, here’s my point…
Take photos with your loved ones! Your children, parents, spouse, friends … everyone! Capture the moment! Don’t delay! Every chance you get, take the opportunity to capture a moment in time. That’s my point. So what are you waiting for? Go and take a photo! Oh … And you’re welcome to share it with me! Just look me up on Facebook and let’s show people how easy it is to capture these magic moments!
